This is a guide on how to set rates correctly on half-life mods.
1.0 mbps and higher Cable-T1-T2-T3-lan users
Start your rates HIGH. 15000-20000 rate. cl_updaterate 100. Set cl_cmdrate 1 increment higher than your fps_max. (or whatever your HIGHEST frame rate you run on that particular map)
DSL-ADSL 256k-800kbps users
Start your rates mid range. 8000-13000 rate. Cl_updaterate 80 Set cl_cmdrate 1 increment higher than your fps_max.
56k users
Start your rates Higer than usual for 56 k but reasonably low 2500-7000 rate, cl_updaterate 35. cl_cmdrate 25-40
Say you start off on a server with your starting rates which depend on your connection type. Type net_graph 3 in console. This displays your loss, choke, and latency (ms).
Say you start off with 10 choke and no loss or latency (ms) Lower your updaterate by incraments of 5 to 10 Until choke is 0-3. Ideal would be 0. But when someone lowers updaterate it usually results in higher latency (ms). BUT 15 and lower latency (ms) is ok. Anything more than 15 isnt acceptable in my opinion. The way to reduce your latency is to make your updaterate higher. If this results in making choke higher than 3 RAISE your rate by increments of 500 until choke is back down to 0-3. Easy?? I will show you a different scenario and I will walk you through it. To sum this exmaple up..
Say you start off with 15 choke and 35-40 ms. First start off by raising your updaterate by increments of 5-10 until your ms is down to 15 and below. This will most likely cause choke to go up even more. But try raising your rate by increments of 500 until choke gets down to 0-3. To sum this 2nd example up. If you start out with quite high ms (35+_. Raise your updaterate first. And then raise your rate by increments of 500 if choke is too high.
If you start off with your starting rates and you have 35+ ms. Always start by raising your updaterate by increments of 5-10 until its down to 15 and below. (No matter how high the choke is) UNLESS your choke is 20+. In a case where you have 20+ choke and 30+ ms. Start off by lowering your updaterate by increments of 5-10 until choke gets down to about HALF of what your original choke was. In these cases where ms and choke are high like that you most likely are in a bad server and you WONT be able to get ms and choke as low as they should be. So do the best you can in those situations.
To sum it all up
1. DO use the starting rates I showed you above.
2. RATES will most likley have to be changed for different servers. (sometimes, and sometimes not) But ALWAYS pay attention to your net_graph when you connect to a server.
2. Set cl_cmdrate 1 increment more than your fps_max. (Or your highest fps you get on that map at the time) UNLESS your on lower bandwidth connection. ie. 56k and slower dsl. Than set it to around anywhere from 35-60. i suggest 25-40 for 56k
3. Setting cl_updaterate higher causes ms to go down. BUT makes choke higher.
4. Setting rate higher by increments of 500 when you have choke causes choke to go down.(To a point) If you raise rate too much for your connection to handle than you will notice much higher than usual ping. Mainly 56k and slower versions of dsl and asdl have to worry about this. But it shouldnt be a problem for people with 700kps+ connections.
5. DO use the methods I explained above.
Once you grasp the concept and see how easier it is done than it is to be explained than you'll see how fast and easy it is to adjust your rates.. If you are having problems or need help, visit the "Technical Support" area of our Forums. Enjoy.
